PDS Tech Commercial is partnering with a global leader in aerospace and defense, to hire a highly skilled Digital Engineer to support mission-critical systems in San Diego, California. The Role & Its ImpactAs a Digital Engineer, you’ll design and deliver advanced VHDL-based digital solutions that power software-defined radio and defense communication systems. Your work will directly contribute to mission-enabling technologies that provide a decisive advantage to the warfighter—supporting programs with real-world impact today and for generations to come.
What You’ll Do Day to DayIn this role, you will:
Design, develop, integrate, and test VHDL-based FPGA digital designs, with a focus on software-defined radio firmware
Work within FPGA development environments using industry-standard programming tools
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Systems Engineering, Hardware, Digital Engineering, and Integration & Test
Participate in waterfall and Agile development environments
Analyze system concepts of operation, requirements, and design documentation
Identify and resolve functional, performance, and timing issues
Support verification activities and ensure compliance with formal engineering development processes
Required QualificationsBachelor’s degree with 5+ years of experience in a related STEM field, or Master’s degree with 3+ years of experience
Significant, current hands-on experience with VHDL design
Working knowledge of formal engineering development processes, VHDL design, and verification
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
This position requires use of information or access to facilities subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or Export Administration Regulations (EAR). These regulations may limit access of controlled technologies: 1) to U.S. Persons, including U.S. Citizens, lawful permanent residents, and other narrow categories including refugees and asylees, or 2) to certain foreign nationals that have received an export license.
Preferred Qualifications8+ years of professional technical experience
Experience with VHDL design and OSVVM verification for FPGA firmware
Experience with AMD/Xilinx FPGA families (Zynq, Kintex, Ultrascale, Versal)
Familiarity with communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART, PCIe, and Ethernet
Experience using EDA tools including Vivado, Quartus, and QuestaSim
Knowledge of FPGA physical constraints and timing closure techniques
Experience generating test benches and supporting formal VHDL verification
Hands-on system-level debug experience using oscilloscopes and logic analyzers
Experience translating system requirements into programmable logic designs and test specifications
Background working with DoD communications systems
