Position Responsibilities
The Authorized Person or Trainee for Avionics & Electrical Systems (AE) plays a critical role within the team responsible for overseeing the design and certifying advanced avionics and electrical solutions. This position is integral to addressing component and system obsolescence, supporting upgrades and expansions of existing aircraft capabilities, driving new product development, and contributing to Bell's continuing airworthiness initiatives and aircraft customization efforts.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong critical thinking skills and technical expertise to meet Transport Canada Civil Aviation (and other international airworthiness) certification standards for light and transport category rotorcraft. This role requires a solid understanding of airborne avionics and electrical systems, along with a willingness to learn and apply accepted means of compliance to ensure adherence to applicable airworthiness standards.
Key responsibilities include determining the scope of investigations, reviewing data and reports, conducting inspections and engineering assessments, and witnessing component, ground, or flight tests necessary to establish compliance with regulatory requirements. A primary focus of this role is evaluating the adequacy and completeness of projects plans and the compliance data to ensure all certification standards are met.
This posting is looking for the following competencies and interest:
- You are either interested in beginning training to become a Transport Canada Civil Aviation (TCCA) Authorized Person or are already authorized. This includes proposing and/or making findings of compliance with Standards of Airworthiness AWM 527/529 or US 14 CFR Part 27/29 and approving type design changes in avionics and electrical systems.
- System and Software Integration
You are familiar with system and software integration, system safety assessments, validation and verification testing in systems integration labs, aircraft flight testing, and aircraft/system qualification and certification processes.
- Aircraft Design and Certification Knowledge
You have a solid understanding of aircraft avionics and electrical design requirements and the qualification/certification process - Certification Compliance Data Review and Approval
You are capable to conduct certification compliance data reviews and approvals, ensuring acceptance by regulatory authorities. This includes:
- Developing project certification plans, reviewing system performance test plans and procedures.
- Analyzing results contained in qualification reports for functional and certification testing at the component and system levels.
- Certification Deliverables
You are skilled in certification deliverables for installed or modified systems, such as but not limited to:
- Electrical loads, thermal analysis, and support for safety analyses.
- Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), High-Intensity Radiated Fields (HIRF), and direct/indirect lightning compliance at both the system and aircraft levels.
- Technical Direction for Certification Requirements
You are able to provide technical direction to projects based on certification requirements and advisory materials.
- Aircraft Ground and Flight Testing
You have experience to oversee aircraft ground and flight testing for compliance data gathering.
Relevant working experience in the following areas is preferred:
- LRU/system testing, Systems Integration Laboratory (SIL) testing and troubleshooting.
- Generate technical solutions to a wide range of technical tasks. Solutions are thorough, practicable, and consistent with organization and discipline expectations:
- Development of avionics system requirements and management, systems specifications, architecture and interfaces with other aircraft systems.
- Development of test requirements to design systems integration lab and flight test aircraft instrumentation design.
- Hardware and software integration testing of multiple systems operating together in a systems integration lab.
- Coordination with avionics system suppliers in the development, integration and testing of displays, flight instruments, communication and navigation systems, sensor and sighting systems, vehicle health systems and vehicle management systems.
The candidate would be part of Mirabel’s Design Approval Organization (DAO) and “CORE” avionics group.
Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering required. Preferred degree in electrical or mechanical (Equivalent experience will be considered)
Position Requirements:
- Minimum 5-7 years of pertinent experience in aerospace industries.
- Good analytical and leadership skills.
- Works independently and develops solutions on advance complexity tasks with subject matter experts.
- Strong communication and writing skills.
- Mentors junior level engineers.
- Strong work ethic and self-motivation.
- Able to coordinate solutions involving multiple organizations or disciplines.
Working level knowledge or mastery with some or all the following Avionics and Electrical areas, is required:
Avionics & Electrical Systems systems (not exhaustive):
- PFD, MFD, EICAS, Cockpit controls, Digital Map
- AHRS, GPS, IFF, ADS-B, TCAS, ILS, Radar Altimeter, Air Data
- Automatic flight control management system
- Communications Systems: VHF/UHF, HF, SATCOM, Datalink, ICS
- CVR and FDR
- Electrical power generation, distribution, and protection (DC/AC, 28 V and HV systems)
- Electrical power storage device
- Lighting, internal and external (commercial and NVIS)
Equipment qualification standards:
- Demonstrated and Working knowledge of RTCA/DO-160 and/or MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-883, MIL-STD-461 and/or , MIL-STD-464
- Awareness of design assurance Levels in accordance with RTCA/DO-178
- Awareness of, RTCA/DO-311 and RTCA/DO-227
Systems Life cycle, Safety and Reliability Assessments:
- Working knowledge of SAE ARP 4754A, ARP 4761 or equivalent MIL standards
