Job Description:

Position Description:  The Flight Line Aircraft Mechanic III may supervise lower skilled mechanics and assist with troubleshooting malfunctions in aircraft structure, landing gear, flight surfaces and controls, anti-icing, pneudraulic, engines, and auxiliary power unit for CH-53E aircraft. This mechanic repairs, replaces, and rebuilds aircraft structures, such as wings and fuselage, and functional components including rigging, surface controls, and plumbing and hydraulic units, using hand tools, power tools, machines, and equipment. The CH-53E mechanic is responsible for inspecting and maintaining rotor airframes and airframe components and performs duties relating to flight line operation. This worker reads and interprets manufacturers maintenance manuals, service bulletins, technical data, engineering data, and other specifications to determine feasibility and method of repairing or replacing malfunctioning or damaged components.

Replaces or repairs worn or damaged components, fuel controls, fuel pumps, oil pumps, and engine mounted gearboxes, and compressor bleed valves using hand tools, gauges, and testing equipment; removes engine from aircraft, disassembles and inspects parts for wear, cracks, security, or other defects, and repairs or replaces defective engine parts and reassembles and installs engine in aircraft. Uses standard aircraft handling and taxi procedures in accordance with (IAW) Naval Aviation Training and Operating Procedures Standardization (NATOPS), specific aircraft manuals, and local regulations, to support the host squadron.

Launches aircraft IAW published flight schedules or as needed to support emergencies. Performs Recovery (pre-positioning support equipment and aircraft directing), including hot brake checks, post flight servicing, static grounding (aircraft to ground) and chocks.

Performs acceptance, conditional, daily, phase, pre D-Level, post D-Level, special, transfer, turnaround and zonal aircraft inspections and preoperational and periodic inspections on SE IAW Maintenance Requirements Cards (MRC) and NAVAIR technical manuals.

Pre/Post-Op checks, fueling and operation of SE, tools, Individual Material Readiness List (IMRL) and Naval Aviation Metrology and Calibration (METCAL) assigned to the Power Line work center, to include conditional/scheduled inspections and periodic maintenance.

Performs all duties in accordance with the Naval Aviation Maintenance Program (NAMP) and Commander Naval Air Forces Instruction 4790.2B.

Job duties require that this mechanic: adjusts, repairs, or replaces electrical wiring system and aircraft accessories, conduct maintenance inspections, and perform miscellaneous duties to service aircraft. This incumbent assists with the jacking and towing of aircraft, enters in the maintenance records description of the work performed and verifies the work was performed satisfactorily, required to keep aircraft in safe operating condition. Performs duties of a Collateral Duty Quality Assurance Representative (CDQAR) and ensures all maintenance is performed and inspected in accordance with the NAMP and is accountable to the quality assurance officer and aircraft maintenance officer within the Maintenance Department.

  • Responsible for quality of aircraft, aircraft component, component repair and overhaul.
  • Responsible for procedural compliance of Services directives and standards. Inspects Company areas for housekeeping, safety, and environmental regulatory compliance
  • Performs technical inspections of aircraft, aircraft components and equipment
  • Performs quality technical inspection of aircraft, aircraft components, parts, repairs, and systems (including avionics, electrical, instrument and armament) as required by functional assignment
  • Performs quality and safety inspections of on-site equipment and tools used in aircraft maintenance
  • Performs initial, in-progress and final quality technical inspections during maintenance, repair, modification, rework, and overhaul of aircraft, aircraft components, and component parts
  • Maintains aircraft forms and records using the Optimized Naval Aviation Logistic Management Information System (OOMA)
  • Must be skill qualified in a primary MOS from any of the following OccFlds: 6113/6173, equivalent skill designation from other services or possess valid FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Certification. 
  • Six (6) years minimum experience as a Collateral Duty Inspector (CDI) on Military Aircraft or 6 years FAA Inspection Authorization (IA) experience
  • Must have four (4) years minimum experience rotary wing aircraft
